Longtime AAU Member/Volunteer Remembered

Written by Administrator

Preston Kim "PK" MartinUPPER MARLBORO, Md. - It is with great sadness that the Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) shares the passing of longtime AAU member and volunteer Preston Kim "PK" Martin on Friday, January 8, 2021. A resident of Upper Marlboro, Maryland, PK dedicated his life in service to amateur athletes for more than thirty (30) years.

For many years, PK served in the Potomac Valley AAU District (District of Columbia, counties of Montgomery, Prince Georges in Maryland, and Arlington and Fairfax and cities of Alexandria and Falls Church in Virginia). First as a member and coach, then later on as a volunteer, most notably, as Boys Basketball District Sports Director and later Governor - tirelessly working towards affording youth and adult athletes of all ages participation opportunities across multiple sports.

Upon his passing, he had held numerous positions within the AAU -- both on the local and national level. On the local level, PK served as PVAAU Boys' Basketball Director since 2002 and soon became PVAAU Governor, a position he held until his passing. Nationally, PK was part of multiple AAU sport and administrative committees. He served for many years on the National AAU Volunteer Services Committee and the National AAU Finance Committee.

In 2014, PK was appointed AAU Men's and Women's Basketball National Chair. PK was instrumental in the development of AAU's alumni program and AAU sports festival initiative, as well as and worked on 3 v 3 AAU basketball development. Most recently, PK secured the signing up of the far west contingent of the ABA (American Basketball League) for AAU membership.

In speaking about his role as AAU Men's and Women's Basketball National Chair, PK stated, "The ultimate goal is to build a bridge between the AAU youth and adult basketball programs that will allow our membership to transition from youth basketball to adult basketball programs."

In 2004, PK was honored as an Outstanding District Volunteer for his many contributions to the AAU, and in 2008 he was given a President’s National Leadership Award in recognition of his dedication and commitment to America’s amateur athletes.

A man of vision, dedication, passion, and strength, PK made a lasting impression on all he met and left an indelible mark on the AAU.

"PK will be remembered as a great man. He touched so many lives with pure love, mentorship, guidance, and life enhancement skills, helping to foster successful relationships with an uncountable number of youth, along with all others, who he met," said the Martin family in a statement.

The AAU has lost a great member, dedicated volunteer, proud leader, passionate mentor, but most importantly, a loyal friend. He will be greatly missed.
